Source: In the beginning...A history of the Dobermann by J. M. v.d. Zwan.

This red male was bred in Holland by the well known breeder and judge Mr. Klöppel, who did a lot towards popularising the Dobermann breed in Holland. He was also the first person to recognise the mighty qualities of Urian.

In fact, Urian was a mis-shapen dog, not only because of his terrible backbone (he had rachitis) but also his legs were about 12 cm too short. According to Mr. Grünig this was a case of shortleggedness due to some acquired injury while still being carried in his mothers womb.

Mrs. Knijff-Dermout said that Urian had not received proper food and care as a puppy and was apparently forced to pull a bakery cart as a young dog. Whatever the truth may be, the fact is that we still have shortlegged Dobermanns today!

It is good to know that in the fourth filial generation after Urian, there was a recurrence of this condition with the scientific term 'Chondrodystrophia foetalis'.

Urian was shortlegged, had an arched back but a nice strong head. He had also a nice red colour. He was, of course, never exhibited but as a stud dog he was splendid. His bloodline was a strenghtening of v. Ilm-Athen blood with the hereditary power of Hellegraf v. Thüringen.

Urian sired some excellent progeny but the very best was Benno v. Römerhof. The littersister of Urian, called Undine, had the same hereditary powers as her brother.
